West Auckland Town were welcomed to Sunderland LGV Park for this Ebac Northern League Division 1 fixture.

As neither team had recorded a win in their previous league matches a competitive match was expected. The performance of RCA on Saturday against a strong Hebburn side meant that confidence was high before the match.

The management team made an unexpected three changes to the starting line-up, with Lawrence, Guy and Charmey replacing Allen, Johnson and Annang-Colquhoun.

The teams lined up as follows:

Sunderland RCA: Marrs, Lawrence, Charlton ©, Nelson, Hawkins, Jakab, Patton, Moan, Davison, Guy, Charmey. Subs:  Johnson, Annang-Colquhoun, Richards, Richardson, Ene.

West Auckland Town: Wilkinson, Wade, Hegarty, Potter, Lay ©, Stafford, Jackson, Noble, Heslop, Ellis, Nicholson. Subs: Hindson, Fryatt, Wright, Blinco, Bennett.

We welcomed Hebburn Town from the Northern Premier League Division One East to Sunderland LGV Park for this Extra Preliminary FA Cup tie.

This was Hebburn’s first competitive match of the season, with RCA having already had two, so a competitive match was expected. There has always been a healthy but respectful rivalry between the two sides from their encounters in the Northern League.

Marrs and Hawkins returned from holiday and were included in the starting eleven with Moan and Annang-Colquhoun added to the team as the manager made a number of changes.

The teams lined up as follows:

Sunderland RCA: Marrs, Nelson, Charlton ©, Allen, Jakab, Hawkins, Moan, Patton, Davison, Johnson, Annang-Colquhoun. Subs: Guy, Richardson, Richards, Charmey, Ene, Kharufa, Lowerson.

Hebburn Town: Newbrook, Groves ©, Waters, Carson, Devitt, Phillips, Spence, Reid, Henderson, Martin, Purewal. Subs: Murray, Archer, Busola-Bada, Rutherford, Moore.

RCA's Simon Jakab fends off a West Allotment second half attack.

Our first home game of the season and we took on West Allotment Celtic at Sunderland LGV Park in this re-arranged match due to pitch problems at their East Palmerville Sports Pavillion pitch. As always a warm welcome was extended to the Committee, Players and supporters.

After the dramatic equaliser at Carlisle last weekend the team showed a resilience that has become a trademark of Steve Riley’s management style, they never gave up.

Long term injuries ruled Lavery, Tait and Winn out while Hawkins, Morris and Marrs were unavailable due to holidays. The management team brought Antony Lowerson on a dual contract to cover for Marrs in goal.

The teams lined up as follows:

Sunderland RCA: Lowerson, Nelson, Charlton ©, Allen, Jakab, Lawrence, Charmey, Patton, Davison, Johnson, Richardson. Subs:  Moan, Annang-Colquhoun, Ene, Bell, Richards.

West Allotment Celtic: Scott, Baltazar, Parkinson, Forster, Scott ©, Errington, Baxter, Kanda, Larmouth, Thompson, Higgins. Subs: Donaghey, Devine, Lowery-Matondo, Carr, Brady.

We began our 2022-23 season with a 150 mile round trip to newly promoted Carlisle City. They play their home games at the ex Celtic Nation ground which has been re-named The Three Rivers, Health & Safety Consultancy Stadium, a bit of a mouthful but the stadium and pitch were in excellent condition.

As with all new seasons there was an air of expectancy amongst the crowd with both sets of supporters looking to see how the new recruits would perform in a real game after some lack lustre pre-season friendlies.

The RCA team has been dogged by injuries during the pre-season and in the week before the season started both Jordan Lavery and Ellis Tait have suffered knee injuries which will keep them out of the team for long periods of the season.

The teams lined up as follows:

Carlisle City: Townsley, Kelly, Bradbury, Bowman, Kirkup, Holt, Irving, Simpson ©, Williamson, Seggie, Kerr. Subs: Atkinson, Studholme, Hartley, Longcake, Shiel.

Sunderland RCA: Marrs, Nelson, Charlton ©, Allen, Jakab, Lawrence, Richardson, Richards, Davison, Johnson, Charmey. Subs: Annang-Colquhoun, Bell, Ene, Moan, Patton.

Pools Youth FC 2 Sunderland RCA 4

Having lost on penalties last week RCA returned to Esh Winning to play Pools Youth FC in the 3rd / 4th place play-off.

Pools Youth took advantage of the slope in the first half, but it was RCA who created the first chance of the game.  A smart through ball from Charlton found Morris but he miscued his effort and the ball went wide of the target.

RCA took the lead in the 11th minute when Lawrence won the ball in midfield before playing it into the path of Charlton who controlled the ball before lashing it into the bottom corner.

Pools Youth were level six minutes later when a long hopeful ball over the top from the keeper saw the number six muscle his way past the RCA defence before drilling the ball past Marrs.

Almost from the kick off RCA Charlton broke on the left before crossing into the box where Morris sent a looping header beyond the Pools youth keeper.

Sunderland RCA entertained Ryton and Crawcrook Albion in their first home friendly of the season.

The hosts got off to a flying start when Johnson converted a poor defensive clearance from inside the six yard area to give them a 4th minute lead.

Both teams had chances to score, Hennis shot wide after ex RCA keeper Jonnie Ball fumbled the ball and Winn shot wide after some good work down the right by Johnson and Charmey.

The Alderson Building Services Trophy Tournament

Andrew Johnson has a second half shot blocked.

RCA were drawn against the hosts Esh Winning in the Alderson Building Services Trophy. Prior to our match West Auckland Town played Hartlepool Pools Youth, comfortably going through to the final next week with a 7 - 1 win.

RCA's manager was looking to get minutes of playing time into the players legs after a slight set back in preparations during the week.

Esh had the advantage of the slope in the first half but it was RCA who had majority of possession in the opening period, however with almost their first attacking move Esh took the lead, a long range thunderbolt of a shot was brilliantly saved by Marrs but the ball rebounded to Esh's number 8 who smashed the ball into the net from 10 yards out.

Whilst RCA threatened their only real effort on goal came in the 37th minute when a Charlton corner was met by Jakab but his header was cleared off the line and scrambled away.

Taylor Richardson on the attack during the second half at Brandon United.

RCA headed up the A690 to play Ebac Northern League Division Two side Brandon United in their first pre-season outing of the season.

Both teams had the usual selection problems, players still on holiday, new players recently signed and the smattering of "Trialists".

Bright sunshine greeted the players along with a very blustery wind which blew across the wonderfully prepared Brandon pitch.

Redcar Athletic 1 Sunderland RCA 2

A long journey south for the RCA faithful to play Redcar Athletic at their BM Bi-Fold ground. This was our first visit to the newly promoted Steelmen’s ground and a very impressive set up it is too and very friendly people.

The hosts have had a reasonably good first season, but RCA would be looking reverse the 4-3 defeat suffered at the hands of the “Steelmen” back in October last year.

The RCA management team was forced to make one change to the team who beat West Auckland Town last week with the injured Ben Errington unable to play due to a knee problem sustained in that match. He was replaced by Callum Patton with a slightly reshuffled back line.

The teams lined up as follows:

Redcar Athletic: Bean, McGuckin, Farrington, Woodhouse ©, Krakue, Brown, Clarkson, Young, Martin, Rivis, Walker. Subs: Jackson, Williams, Mitchell, Eglington.

Sunderland RCA: Marrs, Allen, Charlton, Jakob, Hawkins ©, Lawrence, Hennis, Patton, Davison, Annang-Colquhoun, Carr. Subs:  Johnson, Richardson, Mitchell, Bell, Herdman.

RCA welcomed sixth placed West Auckland Town to Sunderland LGV Park for this Ebac Northern League Division 1 fixture. The original Friday night fixture being cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch, the match was rearranged to the Good Friday kick off after both teams were eliminated from the League Cup.

The RCA Management team would undoubtedly be looking for a much improved performance from the lads after two disappointing defeats in recent weeks against Thornaby and Whitley Bay.

The hosts made two changes to the team with Max Allen and Nathan Lawrence included in the squad at the expense of Matty Weirs and Taylor Richardson.

The teams lined up as follows:

Sunderland RCA: Marrs, Allen, Charlton, Jakab, Errington, Lawrence, Hawkins ©, Hennis, Davison, Annang-Colquhoun, Carr. Subs: Patton, Winn, Bell, Richardson, Herdman.

West Auckland Town: Guthrie, Cobain, Hegarty, Scott, Potter, Brown ©, Wright, Thompson, Blinco, Nicholson, Fryatt. Subs: Harwood, Mitton, Coulson, Jackson, Dodds.
