Ryhope Colliery Welfare deservedly regained the Allan Thompson Memorial Cup last night in a well-supported match at Ryhope Recreation Park. For RCA it was a match too far, following on Saturday’s game against Stockton and particularly the previous night’s visit to Pennywell for the opening match at the new Quarry Hill facilities. No excuses, though: Ryhope CW merited their victory. They are certainly on a winning streak: before the match RCA captain Wayne Henderson presented Phil Hall with a salver to congratulate RCW on their magnificent 2010-11 season.

Mrs Maureen Thompson had asked that all proceeds from the match went in aid of George Johnson, the 18 month old son of ex-Ryhope CW player Neil Johnson, who unfortunately has a very rare illness which means he has spent all but three weeks of his life in hospital and needs constant care. I understand from RCA Chairman Owen Haley that a £300 cheque will be going to the Team George Charity Appeal.

Through rain hard enough for Noah to have readied his ark, Durham City and RCA served up an entertaining performance of end-to-end football.

With the exception of defensive errors and missed opportunities in the second half, this was RCA's best performance in their pre-season run. Not that anyone would have guessed that in the first minute when Durham opened the scoring. Lee Owens equalised soon after and gave RCA the lead from the penalty spot after Brian Close was upended.

Our 2010-11 Season Review, attached to this post, does what it says on the cover: looks back on our first season in the Northern League Division 1 since the 1987-88 season. After a difficult start, it was a successful campaign. Under the leadership of Neil Hixon and his team, we now have self-belief and want to progress as a club.

Enjoy the review and please forward it to anyone you think might be interested in the SRCA project.

Sadly, last night Ray Baines, one of our club Presidents, passed away.

Ray will always be remembered for his dedication to the cause with unbelievable effort and commitment. His ashes will be scattered at the ground as he requested. I will update about funeral arrangements as soon as possible.

We promised Ray that one day RCA would be top of the league. Well we got to that position on your final day on this pitch!

No doubt you will keep an eye on us from a very comfortable chair in Heaven!

Ray, the club will miss you. R.I.P.

It has been confirmed that the funeral of Ray Baines will take place at St Paul's in Ryhope, on Monday, 5 September 2011 at 12.45.

We have had it confirmed that Daniel Hindmarsh did not suffer a broken leg during Saturday's match with West Auckland. It appears that it is ligament damage which is still quite serious. We wish him a speedy recovery.

The club has also been asked to post the following message in from Steven Forster, West Auckland's Assistant Manager, on our website. El Queso Grande has already posted it on the forum.

The match between Sunderland RCA FC and Guisborough Town FC was abandoned after 6 minutes when the floodlights failed. Despite efforts to restore the electricity supply it was deemed unsafe and the match was called off.

Please note that the fixture on Tuesday, 25 October 2011 has been changed and we will now be playing AWAY to Dunston UTS FC.
