Buildbase FA Vase Second Round preview

Submitted by Simon Mears on Thursday, 9 November 2017

Clayton Davis in action for RCA during last season's FA Vase Second Round victory over Stockton Town on Saturday, 12 November 2016.

On Saturday, 11 November, Sunderland RCA are in Buildbase FA Vase Second Round action with a trip to Runcorn Linnets. Kick-off is at 3pm.

Runcorn play their football in the North West Counties League, Premier Division and are currently sitting in second place in the table with 37 points from 17 matches played - winning 11 and losing just twice. They entered the Vase this season in the previous round, beating fellow Northern League Division One side Team Northumbria after a replay - the sides drew 1-1 at the Coach Lane Sports Complex, before Runcorn won the replay 3-2 at the Millbank Linnets Stadium.

RCA, meanwhile, have lost just once in eight matches and got back to winning ways with an excellent 2-1 home win over West Auckland Town on Tuesday evening. Saturday's match will be RCA's first in this season's Vase competition after being exempt from previous rounds for reaching the Fifth Round last season, losing 3-2 to Newport Pagnell Town in extra-time after conceding an agonising 96th minute equaliser.

The winners of the match will receive £900 (losers £300) and take their place in the Third Round which is scheduled to be played on Saturday, 2 December.

Durham County Challenge Cup Second Round draw

Submitted by Simon Mears on Thursday, 2 November 2017

Craig Hodgson fires in a shot during RCA's last visit to Mariners Park - a 2-2 draw in the Northern League on 1 October 2016.

Sunderland RCA have been drawn away to South Shields in the Second Round of the Durham County Challenge Cup.

The match is scheduled to be played the week preceding 6 January.

It should be a cracking match if the two Northern League encounters between the sides last season are anything to go by - the first match, at Mariners Park, finished in a 2-2 draw after RCA surrended a 2-0 lead as ten-man Shields came storming back in the last 20 minutes of the match, with a brilliant Julio Arca strike levelling the match in the final minutes.

At Meadow Park, Shields won 2-1: after RCA went in with a half-time lead, courtesy of a Ross Preston goal, Shields again fought back and a terrific free-kick from Arca and a typical poacher's goal from Gavin Cogdon sealed the points, despite RCA throwing the kitchen sink at Shields for the last quarter of the match, and they went on to complete an historic quadruple, winning the FA Vase, the Northern League Championship, the Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup and the Durham County Challenge Cup.

Gordon Armstrong talk in

Submitted by Simon Mears on Monday, 30 October 2017

Sunderland RCA are delighted to announce that Sunderland AFC legend Gordon Armstrong will be holding a talk in at Meadow Park on Saturday, 25 November, after RCA have taken on Newton Aycliffe in the Northern League.

Gordon made a massive 416 appearances for SAFC, scoring 61 goals and is ranked 7th in SAFC's all-time list of appearance-makers, and is probably best remembered for the tremendous header he scored in the Roker End at Roker Park against Chelsea in the FA Cup Sixth Round replay in 1992 to set up a Semi-Final with Norwich City.

For only £10, RCA are offering entry into the match versus Newton Aycliffe (kick-off 3pm), a pint, and entry into the clubhouse for the talk in with Gordon which is expected to run from 5:30pm until around 7pm. RCA season ticket holders will only be charged £5.

There will also be a raffle to win an RCA home shirt, signed by Gordon.

Space in the clubhouse is limited, so tickets will be sold on a first come first served basis. To reserve a ticket, please contact sunderlandrca@gmail.com or pop into the clubhouse on our next home match against West Auckland Town on Tuesday, 7 November, subject to availability.

The match is kindly sponsored by Viper Goalkeeping and R Green Roofing.
