Today saw the start of the build up to the new season with a convincing 3 - 1 win against a decent Richmond team.

There were a few new faces on show today but the nucleus of last year's squad remained.

The first half was fairly short on goalmouth action with only two efforts of any note on target, a Larkin header which was saved by the Richmond keeper and a long range effort from the Richmond No 10 which Bussey turned round the post.

Due to operational problems on board HMS Bulwalk the ship did not dock until after 6.30pm.

Therefore it was great credit to the players, who disembarked and arrived at Durham’s Riverside Complex for 7.45pm and immediately took to the field with little or no preparation.

RCA suffered their first defeat of the Pre season when they lost to a very well organised Silksworth team.

With six players missing through injury and work commitments it was always going to be difficult.

RCA went 1 0 down after 17 minutes when a long ball forward was not dealt with and although Harkess saved the initial shot Muir followed up to fire home.

RCA entertained Pickering Town of the Northern Counties East League for this afternoon's friendly. There was more than a passing interest in this game as the visitors were drawn against our neighbours RCW in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary round next week.

Both teams had selection problems prior to this game. RCA gave fitness tests to five players and all five failed leaving a squad of 12, one of whom was the physio.

However out of adversity came a truly excellent performance from 1 - 12, although the physio's was only a cameo role of eight minutes.

RCA made the trip across the Pennines to take on Penrith in the Extra Preliminary round of the FA Cup.

Injuries, holidays and work commitments meant that RCA travelled with a very depleted team. Swansbury failed a late fitness test which paved the way for Danni Lay to make his debut for the club. Also making his debut was James Cassidy, while Steven Stewart, Jonathan Davis and Liam McBryde were returning to the club and made the starting eleven.

Prior to the match, there were two topics of conversation, the weather, if the rain would hold off long enough to get the game played, and the return to the starting line-up of club captain Clayton Davis, as it happened neither materialised. The heavy rain forecast turned out to be intermittent showers and Clayton was injured in the warm up and took no part in the match.

Further problems concerned the goal keeper Neal Bussey who also pulled up during the warm up and was replaced by Jordan Harkess.

The injury to C Davis meant that the returning striker Callum Hassan was promoted to the starting eleven to make his second debut for the club and Craig Hodgson was selected to take the place of the suspended Johnnie Davis.

On cue the rain started just prior to the teams coming out although it was not the predicted deluge that we were expecting.
