RCA started really well and went ahead. Hassan won the ball on the left and played a crossfield ball which evaded Robson and fell to Larkin who slotted the ball past Liversedge.

The ill discipline which has blighted the season so far for RCA supporters reared its ugly head again as McNab was judged to have fouled Ferguson on the edge of the box and was shown a very harsh straight red. That being said it was probably a yellow and the player had already been cautioned.

Within minutes a rash challenge from Gordon earned him a booking and from the free kick the ball was played to Dodds on the left and his cross was met by Micky Rae who headed home past new signing Sam Guthrie.

RCA’s management team were forced to make changes with Bussey out with a fractured ankle and Noble suspended, late fitness tests on Charlton, Cassidy and Gordon proved unsuccessful and none were able to take part. Into the team came Hodgson, and McBryde. New signing Flavio Pereira Da Veiga was on the bench.

After the goalless draw at Meadow Park last week there was an expectation that there would be goals in this game.

The squad was further enhanced by the return of Swansbury.

On the injury front it was a case of three in and two out as Larkin, Charlton and Gordon all passed fitness tests, Hodgson and Armstrong were ruled out.

As the manager was away on business it was down to Assistant Steven Stewart to make his first team selection of the season and it just happened to be against North Shields who are unbeaten so far this season. The eleven chosen where: Bussey, Noble, McNab, Larkin, Lay, J Davis, Gordon, Charlton, Hassan, McBryde, Cassidy Subs: Richardson, Harkess, Butler, Pounder and Stewart. (Well we can forgive him for naming himself as a substitute).

The visitors also had a managerial change although this one was of a more permanent nature as Jon McDonald takes over from Graham Fenton who has joined South Shields.

RCA faced a Newcastle Benfield team who were fresh from an 8 - 1 win over Alnwick Town in the FA Vase on Saturday.

The injury list remains horrendously long with Larkin, Callen, Pounder, Charlton and Graham out, add to that C Davis working and Swansbury on holiday and RCA were well below par in terms of numbers.

Drafted into the squad were Richardson, Lay and Wightman (a late replacement when Graham suffered a recurrence of a groin injury in the warm up.)

The visitors also had their selection problems but re-organised the team to suit.

The injury list is getting longer by the game with Larkin and Charlton added to it and failing late fitness tests. Included in the team for the trip to Guisborough were club captain Clayton Davis, Hodgson and Cassidy.

Apart from the traffic problems in getting to the ground RCA also had selection problems with Hodgson, McNab, Armstrong, Cassidy and Charlton all missing for various reasons.

Noble retained the left back spot, while Lay came in at centre back and McBryde and Callen returned to the starting line-up in a re-shuffled team.

RCA were looking to extend their five game unbeaten run against a Whitley Bay team who look rejuvenated under the leadership of Ian Chandler and are themselves doing very well in the league.

Once again injuries and holidays forced changes to the starting line-up. Ross McNab (foot), James Armstrong (groin) and Stephen Callen (holiday) were all unavailable and club captain Clayton Davis is working away, so the management team gave a fit again Kieran Graham his first start of the season and brought back Reece Noble on the left side of the defence, while Danni Lay, returning after holiday, was on the bench.

West Allotment arrived at Meadow Park having only played three league games, however a win against Seaham Red Star would, no doubt, have boosted their confidence ahead of the game.

It is a fact that Ryhope CW, formed in 1892 and Sunderland RCA, formed in 1961 have never met in a competitive match until this derby match on 29 August 2016. It is also fair to say that this was an eagerly anticipated match between two very evenly matched teams who had both had hard fought draws just 48 hours earlier, RCW against Shildon and RCA against Morpeth Town.

Martin Swales, returning to his old club, had a number of selection problems. Ross McNab, injured on Saturday, was ruled out and leading goal scorer Stephen Callen was unavailable due to holidays. There was some good news as Liam McBryde passed a fitness test and went onto the bench. James Armstrong and club captain Clayton Davis came into the starting eleven.

The teams took to the pitch on a beautiful sunny day and lined up in front of a good sized crowd.
