Northern League 1

Goalscorers: SRCA: Davis,  Benfield: Brayson (3), Cornish, Taylor, Convery.

The fall from grace of RCA has been as dramatic as the rise during the FA Vase run.

Today was not only a day to forget but a day that showed all of our weaknesses in one game, outplayed in every department we never looked like winning this game, from the seventh minute when a long ball on the wind caught us out and Cornish slotted home RCA were chasing shadows.

The management team made wholesale changes to the team following their defeat against bottom club Norton and Stockton, in came Armstrong, McNab and Cummings to a re-jigged back four and Glen Lane was also brought in to play wide left.

The high wind was always going to be a factor in this game and as already mentioned it played a part in the first goal when a long ball clearance was allowed to bounce in front of the RCA defence and Cornish was left one on one with Harkess and he slotted the ball past the RCA keeper with some aplomb.

In the 13th minute RCA had a good chance to equalise when Davis played the ball to Wightman who slipped the ball through to Callen, but the out of form striker shot over the bar.

Two minutes later it was 2 - 0 as Harkess cleared the ball straight to Brayson and Benfield's leading goal scorer does not miss gifted opportunities like that as he raced forward unchallenged to blast the ball home.

On the half hour there was a glimmer of hope for the RCA faithful when Armstrong played in Gordon and his pass into the box was met by Davis who fired the ball into the net at the second attempt.

However any sign of a recovery was dashed in the closing minutes of the half when a cross into the box from Riley was looking to go out for a goal kick but with both Armstrong and Taylor battling in the box the referee awarded a penalty for a shirt pull and dismissed Armstrong, this was our third dismissal in the last five games. Brayson dispatched the penalty into the corner of the net 3 - 1 at half time.

The second half didn't get any better even with the wind. In the 50th minute Gordon was injured and replaced by Proctor.

On the hour mark another route one ball was played straight down the middle of the park by Grainger, against the wind, and the ball fell to the unmarked Taylor who ran five yards before slamming the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

The game was effectively over as a contest now and although RCA did try to get back into the game they never tested Grainger in the Benfield goal.

In the 87th minute Brayson completed his hat trick when he latched onto a through ball from Convery to slip the ball past Harkess and in injury time Convery completed the scoring when he finished off a super passing move involving Scott, Brayson and himself before he broke into the box and side footed past Harkess.
